Because there are multiple Matts in The Butter Room (and pretty much everywhere else), within the group my name is always written as a single word. Even Todd’s iPhone knows as much.

We have landed. #furthur
Kinda jealous of our Virginia TBR crew. The Mothership is conjuring up some great memories from last March!
The new tumblr directory is out and The Butter Room is one of the 10 featured music blogs. I’m proud we’ve carved out a pretty large niche on here as the blog for live music, especially considering that much of our coverage has been from actually being part of so many concerts in the past year (with plenty more to come this year).
This ever happen to you? I dreamt in Tumblr last night.
I walked around the city, covered in little hearts and reblog buttons. I showed my appreciation for a beautiful sunset by reaching out and poking its like button. I saw some delicious tacos, hit reblog, and had some of my very own. This was a world I could live in.
Fast-forward to this morning: I was tired, disheveled, and there was a really pretty girl on the subway. To show my appreciation, I went to push her like button. Didn’t work. Hit it again. Nothing. I tried and tried, but nothing was working right.
Long story short, now I’m in jail. I used my phone call to select today’s five picks:
Gödel, Escher, Bach, Tumblr
GEBT is a book group dedicated to reading one chapter a week of Douglas Hofstadter’s 1979 masterpiece book about artificial intelligence, mathematics, consciousness, puzzles, music, and language. I know what three of those are!Growing up Heroes
I thought this was going to be something like a teenage Clark Kent blogging about how horrible puberty is, but Growing up Heroes is in fact much cuter and much less annoying than that. The Butter Room
The Butter Room is built to spread a passion for live music. This ten-person group posts a ton of great content, including reviews, daily features, interviews with musicians, photos from the road, and of course, some music. The Tickr
The Tickr covers the culture of professional sports fandom. Less about the scores than the athletes themselves, this Tumblr blog focuses on the sights and sounds that make it fun to be a sports fan. Don’t miss their guide to throwing a Super Bowl party.Fuck Yeah Dioramas!
While it’s true that the whole “Fuck Yeah” thing might be getting old, I can’t just sit by and let something as awesome as a bunch of dioramas all gathered together go unnoticed. It’s time to take a stand! Say it with me: Fuck Yeah Dioramas!Who do you nominate for the next episode of Tumblr Tuesday?
Look at that… The Butter Room getting some love from the Tumblr staff!
Next Friday The Butter Room will be bringing you live coverage from Indio, CA as Festival 8 kicks off. It will be one of the biggest weekends in recent Phish history, perhaps even pushing aside Hampton, Red Rocks, and The Gorge as the premier shows of 2009. And for the band’s biggest fans, this will be our final exorcism of Coventry demons as we finally get festival vindication. So in honor of 8, here’s some quality Festival Phish!

All kinds of awesomeNew experiences and friends are the best thing to come out of The Butter Room.
I couldn’t agree more. It’s been just about a year since I joined The Butter Room, and I never thought I’d get anywhere near as much out of it as I have during just the past six months. The Butter Room has grown into way more than just a place to share audio, video, and photos of live music experiences.
We’ve formed lasting friendships and successful business partnerships, brought together diverse groups of friends from different pockets of the country with different musical tastes, and had a helluva good time while seeing some wonderful music. Since March we’ve been able to have Butter Room meet-ups in Hampton, Charlottesville, Jones Beach, Deer Creek, Alpine Valley, and this past weekend at Louisville’s Forecastle Festival.
We’ve also had the opportunity to meet up with some of our fantastic tumblr followers on Phish tour at Fenway (Shannon) and Star Lake (Megan). We’ll be getting together again in some numbers next month as well, meaning all said we have brought multiple members of this community together from across the country almost 10 times in six months. That blows my mind!
I really feel like I now have a huge second family. I know all of the guys (and girls) in this collective will have my back and take care of me if and when I need their help; likewise, I hope they know that I’m always going to be in their corner as well.
This weekend at Forecastle, Martin and his crew invited me in like they’d known me for years (when in reality Martin and I only met in person three weeks prior for one of the most memorable weekends of Phish I’ve ever had) and kept me in good spirits even after I returned to my car to find that someone had smashed it in a hit-and-run. Martin, Jen, Randy, Kevin, Brooke, Dana, Tonto, Margie, Becky, Justin, Walt… I’m probably forgetting some other people here, but y’all showed me the true Southern Heat this weekend and I’m going to make sure this isn’t the last time we get together.
No matter how successful the live music blog has become or will become in the future, I feel truly blessed to be part of The Butter Room for what it has added to my life this year and what can only continue to grow in the future. I love all of you guys!
Looks Like Rain -> Jam - Grateful Dead
3.28.85 - Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY
1985 is one of my favorite Dead years, and with good cause. It is one of the last years to find all members still reasonably on top of their skills, creating truly innovative and interesting improv, and the sets featured a wide variety of material. This 16 minute Looks Like Rain features a really great jam.
Enjoy this as well as some great picks from April and June of 1985. We’ll revisit this year later in the summer with some more choice picks.

Love this tune and this jam!
A view of The Butter Room
Just got a call from Tood… In The Butter Room (the real one)
This is a big week on tour for us. We are excited to give you as much coverage as we can during and after the shows.
Butter Room Chicago (minus Joel) kick off the week in Asheville tonight for the Phish show. On Wednesday, we will be live blogging from three shows. Matt and Eugene (aka Butter Room Chicago) will be at Phish in Knoxville. Sparky and I will be sending updates form David Byrne in Charlottesville, and Curry will be covering No Doubt in Virginia Beach.
The weekend is going to be big with Matt and Eugene at Bonnaroo, and Martin gets into the act with Blue Mountain in his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina.
Follow The Butter Room on Twitter or follow From the Road on Tumblr for all the updates!
Look at these tour rats cats.

GET PUMPED, SUMMER TOUR IS HERE!!!
Our good friend/Maven employee/TBR contributor Joel is now joining us for Fenway, and catching Umphrey’s on the way out to Boston. Todd and Graham are covering NYC shows all week, and this is just the next six days! From June 9-21, Eugene and I will be on tour covering Phish and Bonnaroo.
To commemorate both the launch of The Butter Room 3.0 as well as the first Phish 3.0 summer tour, we’re holding a tour opener contest. The winner of the contest will receive 2 lower level tickets (Sec 126) for Phish’s June 10th concert at Tennessee University’s Thompson-Boling Arena. If you’re going to Bonnaroo, but didn’t want to shell out the money for Knoxville, want to see CK5’s indoor light show, or are just amped to see more Phish (we most certainly are!), this is a great opportunity.
Here’s how to enter:
- You must be able to attend the concert, as the tickets will be handed to you by us, The Butter Room, at a pre-show meet-up at the arena. A
- Leave your song choice and email address in the form below.
- Please click through to the permalink to see others answers before submitting a song already chosen by another user.
- Duplicate entries will not be honored.
- The winning entry will be contacted by Tuesday, June 2nd via email to schedule logistics for ticket pick up. This is why it’s crucial you include your email address!
The Butter Room will be covering the entire summer tour with live coverage at our companion blog, From The Road. This area of the site will feature photos from before, during and after the shows, call-in posts in which you can hear us discuss the show at setbreak and after, as well as tidbits we think those of you at home would be interested in knowing. We’ll also have recordings from the shows for you to listen to by next morning, along with comprehensive reviews, photos, and wrap-up podcasts highlighting the best material each week.
So, what song will Phish open its first summer show with this Sunday at Fenway Park?
I would get in on this if you’re a Phish fan. I can’t… since these are my tickets and it would probably not be kosher to win my own extra tickets. Oh, and the opener is going to be Llama, so you should probably dial that in while it’s still available.
Summer tours are approaching, and we are getting amped up to cover a variety of live shows this year. Enter “From The Road”, a new section in the butter room that will be full of raw footage live from the venue. This might include twitter-like posts, mobile photos, and even voice messages.
We are kicking off “From The Road” this coming Monday in Charlottesville, Virginia with Elvis Perkins in Dearland. Then the fun begins as we’ll be at Fenway Park for the first Phish show since Hampton. We will be covering 21 of the 27 Phish shows this summer. We also have Wilco, David Byrne, U2, Bonnaroo, and Rothbury planned.
“From The Road” can be found at fromtheroad.thebutterroom.com and all updates will be sent to our twitter account. It’s another tumblr site, so for you tumblr freaks, follow us.
If you’re a fan of live music, definitely give The Butter Room’s From The Road tumblr a follow. We’re going to be hitting a lot of shows this summer and working hard to provide you with behind the scenes coverage of our adventures - before and after the shows, inside the venue, and updates as we travel across the U.S.
Here’s another one of my favorites from the famed May ‘77 run. These guys really knew how to package all of their sounds without making it too crowded. I believe the sound crew was just as responsible as the musicians. This recording is a great example. Enjoy!
