Wilco - “Ashes of American Flags”

A song I’ve always felt was a fitting memorial for 9/11, this is the demo version. What’s interesting/ironic is that originally the album was slated for a September 11, 2001 release:

Wilco had planned on releasing Yankee Hotel Foxtrot on September 11, 2001, but Tweedy did not want a change in record labels to significantly delay the release of the album. Within weeks of being released from the label and Jay Bennett leaving the band, MP3s of all tracks from the album began to appear on file sharing networks. In a decision aimed at discouraging the pirating of lower quality MP3s and having some control over how the album was distributed, on September 18, 2001, Wilco began streaming the entirety of the album on their official website.

Wilco - “I’ll Fight”

Staying with the Chicago theme, here’s my favorite song off the new album. The whole thing is great, but I love this one.

SECOND CITY/WILCO PROPOSAL
I die. I got misty.
also: WAS THE REDHEAD MENTIONED MISS BILLS? I see her in the background. I bet it was. <3
via: adventures in solitude

i spent a few hours at second city’s annual 24 hour improv marathon, letters to santa. it’s a charity event, with proceeds going to needy families. we watched several hours of improv, which was mostly really great. tj jagadowski, i’d forgotten how fucking awesome you are. i also fell in love with a red-headed improviser who played the entire 24 hours and was tack sharp from beginning to end, even with no sleep.
…at the end of the marathon, jeff tweedy played a few songs.
it was actually a song auction—if you are the highest bidder, you choose a song and jeff tweedy comes over to where you’re sitting and sings that song for you and you alone. well, you know. for everyone, really, but you get to gaze into his eyes and all.
in the middle of it, a guy probably in his mid-twenties or so bids a whopping $500 for a song and wins, of course. he asks jeff to sing the song to his girlfriend, and then quickly spills the beans that he doesn’t actually have the money to pay, but the aforementioned tj jagadowski gave it to him so that he could do this. he tells us that he doesn’t have the money because he has spent it all on an engagement ring. the crowd goes wild, he proposes, she says yes, jeff tweedy plays “true love will find you in the end”, and everyone cries. GOOD JOB, DUDE.

This is awesome for about a million reasons.

How fucking baller is that?  Tweedy + Second City for the marriage win!

Wilco & Fleet Foxes - “I Shall Be Released”

8.23.08 - Bend, Oregon

Last month, while on a west coast tour with Fleet Foxes, Wilco invited their opening band to join them for an inspiring rendition of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released.”  At the urging of fans, Wilco has released a free mp3 available for dowload at their site.  You can download it from us, or from Wilco.  All they ask is that you agree to vote in November.  So you should probably download this song, and vote.

Wilco - “A Shot In The Arm”

From Wilco’s 1999 Album, “Summerteeth”, this song really speaks a lot to me.  Sometimes all we need is that “shot in the arm” to get us back on track.  Sometimes that’s a friend, sometimes it’s a partner.  It could be a job, an opportunity we didn’t forsee, maybe just a change in scenery.  But summer is too beautiful and life is too short to not be happy and comfortable with who we are and what we’re doing with our lives.  So get off the Internet, get away from work, find a way to enjoy your summer and find a new relationship, find a new hobby, find a new you.

The ashtray says
You were up all night
When you went to bed
With your darkest mind

Your pillow wept
You covered your eyes
And you finally slept
While the sun caught fire

You’ve changed
