Gene Wojciechowski: Lane Kiffin Is A Weasle

While this is completely true, the larger issue is that college sports is now full of scumbag coaches (and I use the term coach lightly). Over the past decade we’ve seen the emergence of a new brand of college coach: one who is less educator and more self-promoter; those that were once great recruiters have been replaced by enticers.

Loyalty is tied to how much blind respect and money you are provided as the team “leader.” If things go poorly you simply jump ship, usually walking away with unearned millions. When things are good, you leverage it to gain more power as The Enticer, or more often the case, use it to increase your national profile by moving on up.

If and when you’ve established yourself as a success, you now have another avenue: The Pros. If things go really poorly and the NCAA is personally breathing down your neck (which takes a lot given how much corruption goes on without investigation or consequence, especially in major programs), you can go work for an organization in which teaching, mentoring, and tradition building are secondary to a lifestyle of excess and entertainment.

The problem seems to be that more coaches than not today don’t understand what it means to be a professional, and don’t know what it means to be leaders of young men and women. This generation of 30-something, ego maniacs that we still hold in the same breath as true coaches have stepped all over an already fragile college athletic system to advance their own careers.  But I have to wonder, what career would these people have if there weren’t college sports to facilitate them? Most of them seem like the kind of people that would either cheat their way to the top elsewhere or end up at the bottom faking a set of skills they ultimately only half possess.

The Lane Kiffins and John Caliparis may end up winners at their respective programs, but their long terms success is completely personal - and usually at the expense of those they leave behind in their failures - students, athletes, fans, institutions. It’s really starting to take away from the games I once loved, and I can’t help but wonder when this country will start holding the system - in its multiple facets - accountable.

Brian Urlacher appears to be out for the season after dislocating his right wrist, the linebacker said Monday. The team has not given the official word, but Lovie Smith is expected to address the issue during his afternoon press conference.

Urlacher injured his wrist in the first quarter of Sunday’s 21-15 loss to the Packers. He was ruled out after halftime.

When asked about his status Monday, Urlacher said in a text message that his “season is over.”

He was scheduled to undergo surgery Monday morning upon the team’s arrival back in Chicago from Green Bay. A dislocated bone had to be surgerically put back in. The surgery might have revealed more extensive damage. (read more)

Being a Chicago sports fan is not an easy task.  This is going to be one painfully long, drawn out season.

The Chicago Bears pulled the big upset Thursday afternoon by acquiring Denver Broncosquarterback Jay Cutler, a source told ESPN.com.

The Broncos confirmed the move.

Terms of the trade weren’t immediately available, but the Bears had to beat out the Redskins, Buccaneers, Lions, Titans and other teams to get land the 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterback.

Word is the Bears are sending Kyle Orton and two first-round draft picks to Denver.

Tonight’s 60 Minutes interview with USC coach Pete Carroll.

Everyone should check this out.  It really has very little to do with football and a whole lot more to do with someone who uses their career to help young people and the community.  His philosophy on football, coaching, and life should serve notice on what it means to be a winner.

Barack Obama on creating a 8 team college football playoff system

Clearly the president elect is laying the groundwork for his 2012 reelection. If Barack Obama pulls off a playoff system, Texas would turn blue in a heartbeat. They’d nominate the man for sainthood.

Favre as a Chicago Bear?  Woah.  My head might explode!

“The Green Bay Packers, unable so far to trade Brett Favre and facing his arrival at training camp, are reportedly considering taking a step they desperately wanted to avoid: dealing him to a division rival.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, citing a source close to the situation, on Wednesday reported the Packers were considering seeking a deal with one of their rivals, most likely the Minnesota Vikings or Chicago Bears, if all else fails.”

ESPN First Take co-host Dana Jacobson has been suspended for one week for her comments during a celebrity roast celebrating ESPN’sMike and Mike in the Morning. ”The suspension, first reported in the Chicago Tribune, comes after Jacobson reportedly said “F*** Notre Dame,” “F*** Touchdown Jesus,” and “F*** Jesus” in an attempt to talk trash to Mike and Mike co-host Mike Golic, a former Notre Dame football player.

The context is everything here: She didn’t say this on the air, she said it at a celebrity roast, an event at which people are supposed to go out of their way to be outrageous. She should be welcomed back on the air when her suspension is over.

I think this basically comes down to the “Fuck Jesus” remark.  I’m still not sure I agree with suspending an on-air personality for statements made (while under the influence) outside the office.  But come on, when you have Coach Frontbutt sitting right next to you, and you’re roasting an ND alum… doesn’t common sense prevail?  JESUS!
