Trey Anastasio plays the Riviera Theatre in Chicago on Friday, February 19, 2010.
(via thebutterroom)
I received a press pass to shoot in front of the stage at last night’s Trey Anastasio show. I captured some incredible shots (this one being my favorite as you can see Trey bending a note with a huge smile on his face). I also shared a few words and a fist pump with Trey as I was leaving.
Today is the 7th anniversary since I saw Trey for the first time with Phish at Allstate Arena on 2.20.03.  Last night was about the 70th time I’ve seen him live, and I’ve never seen him healthier, more energetic or playing better than he has been the past few months. The guy is loving it again and I think this photo says as much.

You Can’t Always Get What You Want - The Rolling Stones
10.17.73 - Brussels, Belgium

This version absolutely smokes! Pure emotion in the music and Mick’s voice alike.  This entire show is fire though, from an unfortunately very poorly represented era of live Stones.

1. Brown Sugar
2. Gimme Shelter
3. Happy
4. Tumbling Dice
5. Dancing with Mr. D
6. Angie
7. You Can’t Always Get What You Want
8. Midnight Rambler
9. Honky-Tonk Women

In a ruling that certainly will impact on the future of live entertainment, the Department of Justice has approved the merger of Ticketmaster and Live Nation. The DOJ had been examining the potential union of the two companies for a year and some observers had expected that the government would determine that the merger violates the country’s antitrust laws. As it now stands, the new entity brings together a soup to nuts approach by owning: many major music venues, the nation’s major ticketing company, the country’s largest event promoter and also Irving Azoff’s powerful Front Line Management group. While some had suspected that the government would require Ticketmaster to divest itself of its TicketsNow secondary ticketing site, the DOJfailed to make this a condition of the merger.

Call or write to your congressmen and women to voice your displeasure that this has passed. It will undoubtedly hurt live music fans, especially in these harsh economic times.

Epic fail, DoJ.  This is bad, bad news.

The new tumblr directory is out and The Butter Room is one of the 10 featured music blogs. I’m proud we’ve carved out a pretty large niche on here as the blog for live music, especially considering that much of our coverage has been from actually being part of so many concerts in the past year (with plenty more to come this year).

Jerry Garcia Band
February 28, 1980 - Keane College, Union, NJ

On a given night, Jerry Garcia Band could musically rival anything from the Dead. This gem finds the fat man and the four-piece JGB playing at their finest during a late night show at a small New Jersey college at the beginning of a new decade.

March 30, 1988 - E. Rutherford, New Jersey - Brendan Byrne Arena

Welcome to Jamwich, a blog for those special jams that contain two slices of the same song with a lot of tasty treats in between.

The first band to introduce me to the jamwich was the good ole’ Grateful dead. This is from my favorite show of 1988. Love the return back into UJB.

Jerry Garcia Band - “Visions of Johanna”

There’s no way to measure his greatness or magnitude as a person or as a player. I don’t think eulogizing will do him justice. He was that great - much more than a superb musician with an uncanny ear and dexterity. He is the very spirit personified of whatever is muddy river country at its core and screams up into the spheres. He really had no equal. To me he wasn’t only a musician and friend, he was more like a big brother who taught and showed me more than he’ll ever know. There are a lot of spaces and advances between the Carter Family, Buddy Holly and, say, Ornette Coleman, a lot of universes, but he filled them all without being a member of any school. His playing was moody, awesome, sophisticated, hypnotic and subtle. There’s no way to convey the loss. It just digs down really deep.” - Bob Dylan

Even when just jamming in the studio, covering one of Dylan’s best pieces of writing for simply the fun of it, that soul and exuberance is on display for all to hear.
