The findings indicate that male voters exhibit biological responses to the realignment of a country’s dominance hierarchy as if they participated in an interpersonal dominance contest.”

In other words, only the pansy boys voted for McCain last year.

I’ve been sober for two-and-a-half years. My children are happy. In August, my wife and I will celebrate our fifteenth wedding anniversary. My band is back together with a sold-out tour. And in September I’ll play a solo concert at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic.

Trey Anastasio, Phish Frontman, Tells Addiction Story On Capitol Hill, Lobbies For Drug Courts (Huffington Post)

This is a great read, and put a huge smile on my face to see that one of my musical heroes is truly proud of the path he’s on and has come to terms with his destructive behavior.  The future of Phish and this summer tour couldn’t look any brighter after reading this news.

And perhaps the true value of this article and Trey’s appearance in D.C. is his experience in drug court and rehab programs that prevented him and others from going to prison for crimes that were hurting themselves far more than society as a whole.  More importantly, drug court and rehabilitation actually works, compared to imprisonment:

Upon release, between 60 and 80 percent of drug users commit a new crime — most often drug-related, according to Department of Justice stats. And, according to a study in Prison Journal, 85 to 95 percent begin using again almost immediately — if they ever even stopped.

Anastasio saw it first-hand when he missed an appointment and was sent to jail for two days. “I can tell you that behind bars there was rampant drug use,” he says. “What’s more, the people I met there spent their time blaming judges and lawyers for their circumstances. Not in drug court. In drug court, full responsibility rest with you and you alone.”

Drug courts, meanwhile, produce graduates intent on staying out of prison. Nationally, 75 percent of graduates stay out of jail for at least two years after leaving the program, a rate that the “corrections” industry could never dream of attaining.

Addiction is a battle far too few people actually care to understand, especially in our political and legal systems.  But I firmly believe that drug court offers an economic, compassionate solution that if our friends and family had to go through, we would be thankful for - much more thankful than the alternative. Check the link for some more substantive details and statistics on these types of programs.

Specter Lets The Expletives Fly

brooklynmutt:

“Now I can say it: what a bunch of fucking assholes!”

“This is something I’ve wanted to say for years: is there a bigger dick on this planet than Mitch McConnell?” he said. “I know he thinks he’s doing his job, but please, what a fucking turd.”

Observers who are accustomed to the much-ballyhooed collegiality of the Senate were taken aback by the jaw-dropping profanity of Sen. Specter’s parting shots, many of which were breathtaking in their anatomical crudeness.

“He must’ve had a lot of rage bottled up over the years,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). “Suddenly he was talking like a Somali pirate.

“he reserved some of his harshest words for House Minority whip Eric Cantor: “Eric fucking Cantor? Please. That douche can kiss my goddamn stimulus package.”

Kal Penn Joining The Obama Administration

Did anyone watch House last night? I won’t spoil what happened (as it was already spoiled for me), but needless to say, Kal Penn is no longer a cast member and House now has a mystery to solve far larger than in most of his cases, one that will likely be central to the rest of the season.

As it turns out, Penn didn’t get fired and isn’t looking to make “Harold and Kumar: Summer Tour Adventures.” Instead, he’s giving up acting and going to Washington to work for our 44th President as a liason to chairities.

You have to hand it to Kal. Not only did he campaign for Barack, but he’s stepped up to the plate to actually go to work for change. Lots of respect!

That is pretty draconian. $500,000 is not a lot of money, particularly if there is no bonus.

So let me get this straight: if you’re making 500K or less, you don’t have much money? Wall Street can suck it. None of these people have a clue about anything outside of their little bubbles… the ones they’ve created at the expense of millions of Americans’ livelihood.

Palin takes prank call from fake French president

Sarah Palin has unwittingly taken a prank call from a Canadian comedian posing as French President Nicolas Sarkozy and told him she may make a good president in eight years.

The Republican vice presidential nominee discussed politics, the perils of hunting with Vice President Dick Cheney, and Sarkozy’s “beautiful wife,” in the telephone call released Saturday.

When the caller told Palin she would make a good president, she laughed and replied: “Maybe in eight years.”

Palin campaign spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt confirmed she received the prank call.

“Governor Palin was mildly amused to learn that she had joined the ranks of heads of state, including President Sarkozy and other celebrities, in being targeted by these pranksters. C’est la vie,” she said.

I think the funniest part is that she talks negatively about redistributing wealth in a conversation she believes is with a President of a socialist nation.

While Ms. Palin took office promising a more open government, her administration has battled to keep information secret. Her inner circle discussed the benefit of using private e-mail addresses. An assistant told her it appeared that such e-mail messages sent to a private address on a ‘personal device’ like a BlackBerry ‘would be confidential and not subject to subpoena.’

Ms. Palin and aides use their private e-mail addresses for state business. A campaign spokesman said the governor copied e-mail messages to her state account ‘when there was significant state business.’

New York Times: “Once Elected, Palin Hired Friends and Lashed Foes”

This is probably the best article I’ve read on Sarah Palin and her history as a public servant.  While she’s done a lot to improve and change the state of Alaska, there are more than a few examples of why her tactics don’t represent the change that many Americans are looking for in the next administration.  Transparency is not one of her strengths, and I think we’ve all seen the destructive nature of a less-than-transparent Vice President the past eight years.

I thought it was the worst speech by a nominee that I’ve heard since Jimmy Carter in 1980. I thought it was disorganized, I thought it was it was theme-less, I thought it was very, very boring…I personally cannot remember a single policy proposal that he made because they had nothing connecting them. I found it shockingly bad.

Bob Dylan - “Only A Pawn In Their Game”

The deputy sheriffs, the soldiers, the governors get paid,
And the marshals and cops get the same,
But the poor white man’s used in the hands of them all like a tool.
He’s taught in his school
From the start by the rule
That the laws are with him
To protect his white skin
To keep up his hate
So he never thinks straight
‘Bout the shape that he’s in
But it ain’t him to blame
He’s only a pawn in their game.

(full lyrics here)

Forty-five years after Dylan wrote this, and how far have we really come?  If tonight reaffirmed anything for me, it’s that the poor, the lazy, the uneducated and ignorant, those who can’t look beyond the prejustices they were taught to be true since they breathed their first breath… those people will continue to be pawns in the politics of fear, manipulation, and lies. May God, Darwin, or a fucking alien help this nation.  When I wake up twenty-four years old on November 5th, I want to believe we still have a fighting chance; that my children might still have a fighting chance to live a life with the hope and opportunity so many people have given their lives to maintain; that despite our collective emapthy and pessimism, we can believe that better days lie ahead.  The alternative… is there really one?

Blood pressure rising…

… and the vomit in the back of my throat, as I watch Guiliani spew lies, Cindy McCain cradle Palin’s down syndrome child, and a bunch of old white people chant “zero” - which sounds a lot like another word - in reference to Barack Obama.  Meanwhile, I wouldn’t be surprised if more innocent people are being teargassed outside.  It sickens me that I could actually share some of the core beliefs of this party.
