Two Years of Trapped In Time
My first post on tumblr was January 13, 2008, and it was of balloons from New Year’s at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom.  Two years ago I wasn’t living in Chicago, I was still working on my master’s, had one dog instead of two, and wouldn’t have believed that I’d have my own company in the loop.
I’m kinda proud that I’ve stuck with posting to this thing. I’d never blogged before and it really is nice to have a scrapbook of so much of the past two years to reflect on. Yet, my pride is trumped by how easy it’s been to keep sharing my life with hundreds of you when you do the same each day. What’s been even better is becoming friends with so many of you. So, here’s a balloon for each and every one of you in 2010!  And as always, feel free to say hi or tell me how much I suck.

QUOTE
Some say time is like water that flows around us (like a stone in the river) and some say we flow with time (like a twig floating on the surface of the water). My sense of the world around me tells me otherwise. I believe that time is like a train, with men hanging out in front of the engine and off the back of the caboose; the man in front is laying down new tracks the moment before the train touches them and the main in the caboose is tearing up the rails the moment they are passed. There is no liner continuation: The past disappears, the future is unimagined, and the present is ephemeral. It cannot be transversed.

Thank You

To all of you who follow my tumblelog, thank you. I’ve hit another milestone and to have tripled my audience in just a year… well, it’s very flattering and a little astounding to me. When I started this almost 18 months ago, I couldn’t have imagined how many great people would want to keep up with my life, my interests, or what I create. Nor did I imagine that I’d actually develop friendships, creative and business collaborations, and actually meet many of you face-to-face. Hopefully I can continue to add something unique to your daily Internetting. That means a whole lot more to me than some silly number representing my popularity.

Trapped In Time Redesign

Up and running now.  Think it’s pretty fresh, especially the way audio posts display now!

I’m working on my first full redesign since September.  Maybe it’s not a complete redesign, but it will be the first significant overhaul to my presentation in about eight months and seems like a natural evolution in the theme of this tumblelog.
What do you think, an improvement?

I decided that since my tumblr design relies heavily on the background image, that I’d mix it up now that it’s fall.  Not only does this image cull thoughts of autumn, but the B&W fits my layout a little better.

With the exception of the last (which is a noun), these are all adjectives describing myself that I could get used to hearing more often day to day.

Revamped Tumblelog

I’ve re-done my tumblelog with a completely new layout, partially inspired by tumblicity, partly inspired by the end of summer.  The photo is HDR and from atop Mt. Baldy on the Indiana National Lakeshore, facing Chicago.  I’ve added more functionality, including tags on all posts, and a more detailed information box that provides a centralized point for click-through links, date, time, commenting, and the source of the post if it was reblogged.

One thing I’m unsure of: does anyone know if tumblr allows you to aggregate posts by type (i.e. audio, text, photo)?  I suppose tagging could work in this manner, but that is a rather time-intensive task.  It’d be nice to be able to display all text posts, just as you would anything tagged “music.”

Autumn Answers: Just do it

amwelles:

Matt asks: New design?

My rule is that if I have to ask, the answer is always “yes”. Well, provided I have the time and creativity for it, heh.

You’re probably right.  Usually if you have to ask it means you can’t afford it/shouldn’t risk it/are epicly failing.  That’s the nice thing about design though, it stands apart :-)

New design?  Eh, I’m thinking all summer was long enough to stick with one layout.  I’m a fickle bastard.  I think it looks sharp, no? (click through for hi-res)

Go to this, or stick with what I have?  Kinda like what I have in mind here.  And change is usually a good thing.  Comments welcome.
Update: Decided to go with it.  So if you don’t like it, too bad!

The origins of “trapped in time”:

Trapped in time and I don’t know what to do
These friends of mine, I can see right through
You don’t gotta tell me how I don’t gotta move
‘Cuz I’m sittin’ back here sharin’ in the groove
